Away from the usual city life where we are always surrounded by high rise buildings and inhaling fumes from heavily used roads, we decided to take the road less travelled and reside in nature. Embarking on an overseas trip had crossed our minds, but unfortunately work/school schedules did not permit. & so since its SG50 ... we settled for a staycation instead!
Kranji Countryside, a place we never knew existed as a tourist-friendly spot. It is located approximately 5-10 minutes drive away from Kranji MRT Station and inaccessible by foot. However, a shuttle bus (yes, only one) known as Kranji Countryside Express is available at intervals which you can find in the link here: Kranji Countryside Express
Some pit stops you can make when you're on board the Kranji Countryside Express are Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve, Gardenasia, Bollywood Veggies, Hay Dairies and Jurong Frog Farm. Note: Do take into consideration the shuttle bus schedule, especially note longer intervals as the bus uncle is the only man running the "show" and he needs his breaks. Also, Uncle is really friendly and flexible, do let him know if you've any special requests (aka pit stops you want to make) and i'm pretty sure he'll be glad to take you if he can.
Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve
Opening Hours: 7am - 7pm daily
Hay Dairies
Opening Hours: 9am - 4pm daily (Closed on Tuesdays)
Have a glance on how goats are being milked during milking hours between 9.30am - 10.30am and complete your experience with a taste of Hay Dairies Goat's Milk at $2.50 per 200ml bottle and $8.00 per 500ml bottle.
If you're buying in bulks (5 x 200ml bottles at $12.50), Hay Dairies would have it perfectly packed for you! Not to worry if you're travelling by public transport, cause ice would be provided and ours lasted for a good 4-5 hours (the ice barely melted)!
Bollywood Veggies
Opening Hours: Wednesday to Fridays - 9.30am to 6.30pm
Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays - 8am - 6.30pm
Closed on Mondays & Tuesdays.
& not forgetting our favourite part of the trip at Bollywood Veggies ...
POISON IVY! With all ingredients freshly plucked and plowed from her garden, it was an eye-opening experience to dine by nature. Our holiday began right here where we could let loose and just be comfortable.
Nasi Lemak, a must have and highly recommended. Very much different from the ones we have in our hawker centres; easy on the grease (close to none at all) and beautified by a blue pea flower. Mmm~
Sweet Potato Curry, something we haven't heard of before but thought it would've been a tad bit better if there was more texture like bits and pieces of chicken? (inserts greedy face :p)
Unfortunately, the above 2 dishes were their Weekend specials. Do give them a call beforehand to avoid disappointment.
Bollywood 3-in-1 ($10): Banana Bread, Kueh Bingka , and Kueh Kosui ($3.50 each if sold separately). A little more towards the sweet side, but definitely worth the calories!
A close up on their Kueh Kosui ($3.50).
D'Kranji Farm Resort.
An ideal getaway for the weekend if you're a nature lover who values serenity and wouldn't mind a sudden bug or two.
Although inconvenient, D'Kranji Farm Resort has everything to suit your basic needs. From activities to daily necessities, food and night entertainment.
De' Beer Garden/Seafood Restaurant to keep your tummies filled and night packed with late night old school jams (aka 'Ge-tai').
Opening Hours: 4pm to 1am daily &
Lunch - 11.00am to 2.30pm
Dinner - 5.30pm to 11.00pm
As for the villas, our verdict of the resort is that it is decent, well kept and worth the trip although the rooms may be a little too small for comfort. If you're a honeymooner, their superior villa would be just right as a cozy size but any more than 2 pax would be a squeeze.
Feel free do drop us an email if you require any further comments/advice/recommendations on our trip to Kranji. We would be more than glad to share our experience with you. :)
